چکیده

This paper explores the added-value of using interactive head-mounted displays to support command and control of first responders during emergency response. Specifically, it describes and evaluates a prototype system that makes use of Google Glass to enable in-field receiving of information from a command center, as well as in-field navigation and video streaming. The viability and usefulness of the concept was evaluated through a set of end-user workshops and interviews. A small-scale experiment was also conducted to assess the efficiency of using headmounted displays for in-field navigation, as compared to handheld devices. Findings from workshops and interviews suggest that head-mounted displays could be a valuable supplement to radio communication, with potential for reducing information misinterpretation, and for enhancing information quality. Results from the experiment indicate that head-mounted displays have the same level of efficiency as handheld devices when used for basic navigation tasks.

Near-Eye Light Field Displays-0.5em

We propose near-eye light field displays that enable thin, lightweight head-mounted displays (HMDs) capable of presenting nearly correct convergence, accommodation, binocular disparity, and retinal defocus depth cues. Sharp images are depicted by outof-focus elements by synthesizing light fields corresponding to virtual objects within a viewer’s natural accommodation range. We formally assess t...

Information Architecture of Research Institutes’ Website, Case Study: Iranian Research Institute for Information Science and Technology’s Website

Purpose: As mission-oriented organizations, research institutes have the task of answering community questions in specialized areas, and should therefore be able to effectively present their outputs to their target users. Achieving such a goal requires the proper use of information architecture principles to properly organize the information platform in which the research institutes interact wi...

Ultra-wide FOV Retinal Display

Currently available screen and retinal head mounted displays have insufficient field of view to fully exploit many virtual and augmented reality applications. Screen based displays suffer from weight and size restrictions as the image sources, electronics, and viewing optics need to be head mounted. Retinal displays need only the scanning and optical delivery components to be head mounted, but ...

SeamlessDesign: A Face-to-Face Collaborative Virtual/Augmented Environment for Rapid Prototyping of Geometrically Constrained 3-D Objects

In this paper, we propose SeamlessDesign, a novel collaborative workspace for rapid creation of reactive 3-D objects. SeamlessDesign has two significant characteristics in terms of seamless. First, SeamlessDesign supports a wide range of designing processes seamlessly. Users of SeamlessDesign can design from rough drafts to highly detailed 3-D objects in a unified and intuitive manner, includin...

Limited Field of View of Head-Mounted Displays Is Not the Cause of Distance Underestimation in Virtual Environments

Observers binocularly viewed a target placed in a large open field under two viewing conditions: unrestricted field of view and reduced field of view, as effected using a simulated head-mounted display. Observers indicated the perceived distance of the target, which ranged from 2 to 15 m, using both verbal report and blind walking. For neither response was there a reliable effect of limiting th...
